Welcome to the Schizophrenia Channel
People who have schizophrenia may experience hallucinations, delusions, disordered thinking, unusual speech or behavior, and social withdrawal, among other symptoms. These symptoms may occur chronically or in episodes throughout a person's life, and they often cost people opportunities for careers and relationships. Schizophrenia tends to run in families and often goes hand-in-hand with substance abuse. In fact, people who have schizophrenia tend to abuse alcohol and/or drugs more often than the general population.
Researchers do not yet know the cause or causes of this disabling mental disorder. Fortunately, however, treatment for schizophrenia has advanced considerably in recent years. Medications and psychosocial treatments can help eliminate symptoms of schizophrenia and improve the quality of life for people with the disorder. These treatments can also help people struggling with schizophrenia to lead productive lives.
