Fanapt Drug Interactions

Fanapt Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur due to Fanapt drug interactions.

Alcohol or Medications That Cause Drowsiness
Combining Fanapt with alcohol or medications that cause drowsiness can lead to undesirable or even potentially dangerous side effects (such as extreme drowsiness, "passing out," confusion, or impaired breathing). You should not drink alcohol while taking Fanapt. Check with your healthcare provider before combining Fanapt with any other medication that causes drowsiness.

Blood Pressure Medications
Taking Fanapt with a high blood pressure medication might increase the risk of low blood pressure. Make sure to watch for signs of this problem, such as lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting.

CYP 2D6 Inhibitors
Fanapt is metabolized by a specific liver enzyme known as CYP 2D6. Some other medications (known as CYP 2D6 inhibitors) slow down the activity of this enzyme, causing an increase in the level of Fanapt in the blood. This could potentially lead to serious Fanapt effects. When combining Fanapt with strong CYP 2D6 inhibitors (such as the ones listed in this article), the Fanapt dosage should be reduced by half.

CYP 3A4 Inhibitors
Fanapt is metabolized by a specific liver enzyme known as CYP 3A4. Some other medications (known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors) slow down the activity of this enzyme, causing an increase in the level of Fanapt in the blood. This could potentially lead to serious Fanapt effects. When combining Fanapt with strong CYP 3A4 inhibitors (such as the ones listed in this article), the Fanapt dosage should be reduced by half.

QT-Prolonging Medications
In general, Fanapt should not be combined with any other medications that can cause QT prolongation (a certain change in the heart rhythm), due to the risk of a life-threatening arrhythmia.
