An Introduction to Fanapt Side Effects
As with any medicine,
Fanapt™ (
iloperidone) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Fanapt. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Fanapt side effects with you.)
Common Side Effects of Fanapt
Fanapt has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Fanapt were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking either a different
antipsychotic medication or a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients).
As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo or other antipsychotic medications.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Fanapt included:
- Dizziness -- in up to 20 percent of people
- Drowsiness -- up to 15 percent
- A rapid heart rate (tachycardia) -- up to 12 percent
- Nausea -- up to 10 percent
- Dry mouth -- up to 10 percent
- Weight gain -- up to 9 percent (see Fanapt and Weight Gain).
Other common side effects, occurring in 2 to 8 percent of people, included (but were not limited to):
- Joint pain
- Fatigue
- Muscle stiffness
- Blurred vision
- Diarrhea
- Shakiness (tremors)
- Lethargy
- Inability to ejaculate
- Nasal congestion
- Shortness of breath
- Low blood pressure.
