Haldol for Children

Haldol® (haloperidol) is a prescription antipsychotic medication approved for treating various conditions, including psychotic disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), behavior problems, and tics associated with Tourette syndrome. Healthcare providers may prescribe this medicine for children as young as three years old.

Haldol is approved to treat behavior problems in children. In particular, it is approved to treat children who have extremely severe hyperexcitability and who become easily combative and explosive without being provoked. Also, Haldol can be used for a short period of time to treat very severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children who are especially physically hyperactive. The medication can also be used to treat tics (including vocal tics) in children.

When used in children, Haldol should be prescribed only after other forms of treatment (including therapy and other medications) have failed.
