Haldol Uses

Haldol and Tourette Syndrome
Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder that results in repetitive, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics. The causes of Tourette syndrome are unknown, but it is believed that the condition may be hereditary. A few Tourette syndrome symptoms include:
  • Eye blinking and other vision irregularities
  • Repetitive throat-clearing
  • Sniffing
  • Grunting sounds
  • Facial grimacing
  • Shoulder shrugging
  • Head or shoulder jerking.
Tourette syndrome treatment often includes medication to manage tics and behavioral problems, as well as psychotherapy, which can help eliminate any psychological problems that may result. Haldol is approved to treat tics (including vocal tics) in children and adults with Tourette syndrome.
Haldol and Behavior Problems
Haldol is approved to treat behavior problems in children. In particular, Haldol is approved to treat children who have extremely severe hyperexcitability and who become easily combative and explosive without being provoked. Also, Haldol can be used for a short period of time to treat very severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children that are especially physically hyperactive. Haldol should be used in children only after other forms of treatment (including therapy and other medications) have failed. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using Haldol to treat behavior problems in children.

Haldol Use in Children

Haldol is approved for use in children as young as three years old. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using Haldol in children.

Off-Label Haldol Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Haldol for something other than the conditions discussed above. This is called an "off-label" use. Some examples of off-label Haldol uses include the treatment of the following conditions:
