Schizophrenia Home > Risperdal Alternatives

If you are experiencing bothersome side effects while taking Risperdal or if the medication is not adequately controlling your condition, there are other alternatives. Some alternatives to Risperdal can include therapy and other medications. Although it is unlikely that therapy alone can replace the need for medication in people with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, it can be an important part of a well-rounded treatment plan.

An Overview of Risperdal Alternatives

Risperdal® (risperidone) is a prescription medicine that has been licensed to treat the following conditions:
Risperdal is part of a group of atypical antipsychotics or second-generation antipsychotics. For most people, Risperdal is effective at treating symptoms of these conditions (see Bipolar Disorder Symptoms, Symptoms of Schizophrenia, or Autism Symptoms). Most people also tolerate the medication well. However, as with all medicines, it is possible that side effects will occur during treatment with Risperdal. Also, in some situations, the medicine may not adequately control a person's symptoms. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to Risperdal for bipolar disorder or schizophrenia treatment, including:
  • Therapy
  • Other medications.
