Schizophrenia Home > Stelazine Side Effects
Insomnia, dizziness, and sexual problems are some of the most commonly reported Stelazine side effects. These are usually minor and either don't require treatment or can be easily treated. However, there are serious side effects of Stelazine that you should report immediately to your healthcare provider. These include an irregular heart rhythm, seizures, and unusual body movements.
An Introduction to Stelazine Side EffectsAs with any medicine, side effects are possible with Stelazine® (trifluoperazine hydrochloride). However, not everyone who takes it will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate the medication well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Stelazine. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Stelazine side effects with you.)
Possible Stelazine Side EffectsStelazine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and then compared to the side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, possible Stelazine side effects included:
- Dry mouth (see Stelazine and Dry Mouth)
- Insomnia (see Stelazine and Insomnia)
- Menstrual changes, especially missed periods
- Loss of appetite or increased appetite
- Blurred vision
- Muscle weakness
- Nasal congestion
- Difficulty passing urine
- Sexual problems (see Stelazine Sexual Side Effects)
- Darkening of the skin.
There have been reports that Stelazine may cause false positive pregnancy tests (a positive pregnancy test in an individual who is not pregnant).
