Schizophrenia Home > Generic Versacloz

Versacloz (clozapine oral suspension) is not currently available in generic form. Although the patents and exclusivity rights for the drug have expired, manufacturers have not chosen to make a generic version. Although it is not exactly known why this is the case, the demand for this drug may not be substantial enough for it to be profitable to make one.

Can I Buy Generic Versacloz?

Versacloz™ (clozapine oral suspension) is a prescription medication used to treat people with schizophrenia. It belongs to a group of medicines known as atypical antipsychotics.

Versacloz is manufactured by Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Although it is not protected from generic competition by patents or exclusivity rights, there is currently no generic version of Versacloz available.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

It is difficult to say for certain when generic Versacloz will become available. As previously mentioned, the drug is not protected by patents or exclusivity rights. Normally, when a drug goes off-patent, manufacturers begin to make generic versions of the medication.

However, at this time, no manufacturer is making a generic Versacloz drug. It is not entirely clear why this is the case. Versacloz was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February 2013. It could be that the drug is too new for a manufacturer to have started making a generic version.

It could also be that the drug is simply not used enough yet for a manufacturer to find it profitable to make a generic version. In any case, because it is unknown why generic Versacloz is not being made, it is impossible to predict when, or even if, one will be available.
