Generic Navane

All of the patents for Navane have expired, and generic Navane is currently available in four strengths. Generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications -- and the generic versions of Navane have an "AB" rating. This means that all generic Navane products currently available should be equivalent to brand-name Navane.

 

An Overview of Generic Navane

Navane® (thiothixene) is a prescription medicine known as a "typical antipsychotic" that has been licensed to treat schizophrenia.
 
Navane is made by Pfizer, Inc. However, all of the patents for Navane have expired, and generic versions are now available.

Generic Navane capsules are available in the following strengths:
 
  • Thiothixene 1 mg
  • Thiothixene 2 mg
  • Thiothixene 5 mg
  • Thiothixene 10 mg.

  • Mylan Pharmaceuticals
  • Sandoz Pharmaceuticals.
     

Is Generic Thiothixene as Good as Navane?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and then assigns each generic a rating. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic thiothixene versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Navane.
 
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than their brand-name versions. These inactive ingredients might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
