Prochlorperazine Dosing (Cont.)

Prochlorperazine Dosing in Children

Prochlorperazine should not be used in children younger than two years of age or weighing less than 20 pounds. Also, it should not be used for nausea and vomiting in pediatric surgery. At one point, prochlorperazine suppositories in small dosages (for children) were available. However, only adult suppositories are currently available. Refer to the following table for the recommended prochlorperazine dose (for tablets or suppositories) for severe nausea and vomiting in children:

Weight

Maximum Prochlorperazine Dose
20 pounds to 29 pounds
2.5 mg once or twice daily
7.5 mg per day

2.5 mg three times daily or 5 mg twice daily

For schizophrenia treatment in children ages 2 to 12, the recommended starting dose is 2.5 mg two or three times daily.
