Risperdal® (risperidone) is a prescription drug approved for the treatment of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and irritability associated with autism. People with these conditions may have elevated dopamine and serotonin levels, so the antipsychotic medication works by blocking or lessening the effects of these chemicals. Risperdal comes in the form of a liquid, tablets, and orally disintegrating tablets. Potential side effects include drowsiness, increased salivation, and upper respiratory tract infections.
