Risperdal® (
risperidone) is an
antipsychotic medication often prescribed for the treatment of
bipolar disorder,
schizophrenia, and irritability associated with
autism. As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Risperdal. Dangers associated with the use of this drug should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before treatment begins.
Common side effects of Risperdal include abdominal pain,
headaches, and drowsiness. In most cases, side effects of the medication are minor and either do not require medical attention or can be treated easily. However, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience
depression or suicidal thoughts, abnormal muscle movements, or a rapid heart rate.
Other potentially dangerous effects of Risperdal include the increased risk of developing
diabetes, priapism (a painful erection of the penis that does not go away),
seizures, and
tardive dyskinesia (a sometimes permanent condition that involves uncontrollable body or face movements).
