Zyprexa Dangers

There are certain dangers associated with

Zyprexa^® (olanzapine) that you should be aware of before starting the medication. For example, the drug can cause a life-threatening condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Zyprexa may also increase your risk of developing diabetes, seizures, or tardive dyskinesia (a potentially permanent condition involving uncontrollable body or face movements).

There are also a number of common side effects that have been reported with Zyprexa. These problems are often not dangerous but can be bothersome. Some of these common side effects include increased appetite, constipation, insomnia, and dizziness.

In order to help minimize risks with Zyprexa, dangers associated with the medicine should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before treatment begins. You should also talk to your healthcare provider before using this drug if you have:

Glaucoma
An enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH)
A history of bowel blockage or obstruction
Liver, kidney, or heart problems
Diabetes
Seizures
Epilepsy
Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia
Low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension)
Phenylketonuria
Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives.
